Immunization Policy

Under California Health and Safety Code, Sections 120325-120375, children in California are required to receive certain immunizations in order to attend public and private elementary and secondary schools, child care centers, family day care homes, nursery schools, day nurseries, and developmental centers (pre-kindergarten facilities). As both a licensed daycare facility and a private elementary school, MIR is required by these statutes to enforce immunization requirements, maintain immunization records of all children enrolled, and submit reports.

Children will not be enrolled at MIR unless an immunization record is presented and immunizations are up to date, with some exceptions:

Personal beliefs exemption: Personal belief exemptions on file at MIR before January 1, 2016, for a child already attending remain valid until the child reaches the next immunization checkpoint (ages 4-6, age 7/1st grade). At the next checkpoint, you must present an immunization record with up-to-date immunizations to MIR in order for your child to remain enrolled.

Under California Senate Bill (SB) 277, beginning January 1, 2016 parents were no longer able to file exemptions based on personal beliefs, including religious beliefs, to vaccines that are currently required for entry into childcare or school in California. Only medical exemptions are now allowed.

Medical exemption: Children with a medical exemption must present a signed letter from a doctor licensed to practice in California on official letterhead stating why there is an exemption and the duration of the exemption, temporary or permanent. If the exemption is temporary, the letter must provide a date when the exemption expires.

New Laws

The State of California has updated California Code of Regulations Title 17 Division 1, Chapter 4, Subchapter 8 to provide a new immunization schedule for students and to add a requirement for a second dose of the varicella (chicken pox) vaccine. This new schedule and requirement will be in force as of July 1, 2019.

MIR’s admissions practice regarding unconditional admissions and conditional admissions will be to follow California state law as expressed in this document. Parents are advised to review the document to understand the laws and MIR’s admissions practice.

Admissions Policies

At MIR, we enroll students year-round depending on space. Admissions are based on a balance of available spaces for each age and program level as well as the child's readiness for the level of independence required in a Montessori classroom.

Admission preference is given in the following order:

  1. Children currently enrolled at MIR.
  2. Siblings of current students, with these conditions:
    • The current students are re-enrolled during the re-enrollment month (February).
    • The older child is completing or on track to complete the full three-year cycle of their program.
  3. Children with a minimum of one full school year of previous Montessori experience.
  4. New applicants.

Sibling Enrollments

If you have a child currently enrolled at MIR and would like to enroll a sibling, notify the admissions office by emailing admissions@mir.org.

You will need to follow the full admissions process before enrolling siblings. Once you have completed an observation, you can submit sibling applications during the early re-enrollment month (February) for a discounted application fee. Applying during the re-enrollment month does not guarantee a space for the sibling. Siblings are given priority consideration for enrollment.

How do I apply?

For all ages, we accept applications after parents have completed an observation. In a two-parent/guardian household, both must complete the observation. This process will help you

  • Learn what an authentic, accredited Montessori school with AMI teachers offers your child.
  • See the classroom environment for your child.
  • Understand the school culture and educational philosophy at MIR.
  • Decide if Montessori and MIR are right for your family.

Applications for the 2020-21 school year will be accepted March 9-May 18, 2020, following your observation.
